Challenge

Built in the late 1800s, the Boston Hill Center today serves as a two-story retail space. Over the previous 100 years, the exterior brick façade had not only lost its visual appeal, it was also crumbling and letting in moisture. The owners sought out a solution to upgrade the building's performance and aesthetics, while still respecting its history.

Solution

Little Construction and Dryvit worked together to design and implement a custom Outsulation® and NewBrick® system to ensure superior watertightness, energy-efficiency and a completely transformed appearance.

For the Outsulation system, the first step was to clean the existing masonry, then apply the AquaFlash flashing system, Backstop® NTX, insulation, base coat and reinforcing mesh. A dark gray acrylic finish was used for the bulk of the façade, with NewBrick added to vertical columns.

Rob Little, vice president of Little Construction, stated that the benefit of Dryvit products is that "you can design it anyway you want, any color you want, almost any texture you want...and get your CI requirements and durability."

The Boston Hill Center is now leak-free and stands out as a modern shopping area, while still showcasing its historic roots.
