Direct-Applied Systems

In cases where continuous insulation (CI) is not required, a Dryvit exterior finish system can be applied directly over a variety of exterior wall surfaces like cement boards and cement siding materials, concrete, stucco, Insulated Concrete Forms (ICFs), EPS shapes and more. Additional configurations can incorporate air/weather-resistive barriers and moisture drainage capabilities.

Dryvit Direct-Applied Systems all feature attractive, highly-durable finishes with the option to mix and match Dryvit colors, textures and finishes to give your structure the aesthetics of brick, limestone, granite, woodgrain and even metals for easily compatible and affordable cladding.

FAQs about Direct-Applied Wall Systems

Yes, you can install Dryvit EIFS over EPS formwork like Insulated Concrete Forms (ICFs). Use of reinforced base coats and finish directly over the ICFs should consider any exposed ties, irregular and out-of-plane wall surfaces, as well as surface weathering of the EPS.

Base coat materials should not be used to skim irregular surfaces, unless the ICF block is properly sanded to accept the base coat and mesh application. Dryvit has been tested and approved with Nudura Insulated Concrete Forms.

For masonry and concrete substrates, a skim coat of base coat (typically Genesis) is can be used to fill in rough surfaces and provide a smooth base for finish application. The use of reinforcing mesh is optional but may help hide mortar joint patterns in masonry. Proper surface preparation involves cleaning to remove any efflorescence, dirt or dust.

The exterior finish on EIFS cladding may look like stucco, but it is a complete system with layers of insulation and reinforcement underneath for energy efficiency and durability. EIFS is also lightweight. Stucco, on its own, does not have insulation and can be heavy, requiring several layers of product to achieve the impact resistance and coverage required. For more about the difference between EIFS and stucco, read this blog post
