In the summer of 2024, Dryvit was approached to assist with the façade renovation of the beautifully curved New Mexico State Capitol building to remediate cracks and minor moisture intrusion of their existing Outsulation system that had been installed 25 years before.
The goal of the building’s restoration was to enhance its functionality while still preserving the historical integrity. Because of the minimal damage, the new exterior wall system could be applied directly over the existing one, which allowed the building to remain operational and open to the public.
The EIFS contractor, Winter Finishes, installed around 50,000 sq ft of Dryvit’s Direct-Applied system, Option 2, which included the Primus Base Coat, Standard 4.3 oz. reinforcing mesh and a Quarzputz® textured finish in a custom color to match the original building.
This color and texture combination mimics the look of stucco, which is common in New Mexico architecture. The field-applied wall system gave the structure a new impact- and crack-resistant exterior wall surface to extend its building envelope protection. For compatibility with the Dryvit products, Tremco’s Spectrem silicone sealants were installed by American National Insulation (ANI).
The New Mexico State Capitol building now looks brand new with its clean, vibrant exterior coating, while still respecting its original architectural intent.
