The site for the new Deseret Peak High School was a blank canvas, which presented an amazing creative opportunity to be bold with the school’s architectural design. For the building’s exterior, the architects at VCBO chose a neutral color palette with numerous materials and angular geometries for strong visual impact.

Dryvit EIFS via the Outsulation® system make up a large portion of the façade. The system included 2 in. rigid insulation boards, Backstop NTX® as the air- and water-resistive barrier (AWRB), the Genesis® adhesive and an acrylic finish in the Sandpebble Fine texture with 3 colors: Winter Eve, Anthracite Coal and Teakwood.

The gray tones of Winter Eve and Anthracite Coal complement the brick, metal and exposed concrete, with added architectural interest from the diagonal joints that contrast the straight angles of the other building materials. A 70 ft wide eagle extrusion in Anthracite Coal extends boldly across two exterior walls and can be seen from miles away.

To mitigate harsh sunlight, large canopies extend over the main learning blocks, providing natural light and shade in a controlled manner. Originally, the canopy soffits were intended to be stained wood or metal panel, both of which proved too expensive for the budget. Instead, the undersides of the canopies were finished with the gold EIFS of Dryvit’s Teakwood to achieve the desired warmth at a more affordable cost.

Utilizing Dryvit EIFS for their continuous insulation, durability and color variations resulted in enhanced energy efficiency, operational cost-savings and a stunning modern façade.
