Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport

Atlanta, Georgia

The Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport projected 13 million passengers would be passing through in 2015, far beyond their current accommodations. An expansion to the terminal was crucial, but needed a fast turnaround to reduce disruption to the airport's daily operations.

When it came to the building façade, NOW Specialties, Inc. was tasked with creating a state-of-the-art exterior wall system, so they turned to Metalite® 3100. This innovative Metal Composite Material (MCM) system, known for its durability, sleek design and installation efficiency, were central to the project's aesthetic appeal and quick turnaround. The Metalite 3100 wall panel system requires minimal components, which speeds construction and allowed NOW Specialties to adhere to the tight deadlines they were given.

The airport also demanded products that exceeded standard material capabilities, with stringent requirements including:

  • High wind resistance and structural integrity
  • The ability to handle temperatures exceeding 180°F
  • Extensive UV resistance

Metalite® 3100, with its aesthetic and structural resiliency, rose to meet these challenges. Compatible building envelope solutions from Tremco were also selected, including their ExoAir 230 air barrier membrane, which added another layer of defense and the ability to self-gasket around fastener penetrations. Flexible silicone sealants, Spectrem 1 and Proglaze SSG, were advantageous as they could withstand the anticipated winds and UV exposure.

The integration of the Metalite 3100 MCM panels with other high-quality building materials ultimately contributed to the success of this airport expansion.
